I’m excited to share tricks from the trade, in other words, what I’ve learned over 30 years of publication and teaching memoir writing to hundreds of students. Some I’m proud to say have achieved fame and won awards for their writing beyond my imaginings.
Targeting your tribe and knowing your readership, goes a long way in making the writing process enjoyable and very meaningful. Knowing your reading tribe can go a long way in building up your motivation to communicate from the heart with the very people who understand you best.
In this course, you’ll learn about the mindset that leads to revisiting the past with deep appreciation for a life well-lived—no matter what. The principles of memoir writing will be familiar to you from Genesis Art: positivity, looking for connections between seemingly random events, taking the birds-eye view of a life well-lived, finding humor in even challenging situations, and using dialogue to convey quirks of character and fascinating relationship dynamics.
Each month, we’ll explore a different theme related to organizing, researching, recalling, recollecting, thumbing through journals to extract material, reading for inspiration, and more. A brief overview of a topic followed by a writing exercise will start off each class. Rotating members of the group will have an opportunity to read out loud and get feedback each month.
The classes will take place on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7 pm Israel time (the same as the Saturday class now beginning January 27.
If you want to familiarize yourself with my memoir writing style, please look me up at any of these media outlets: Excerpts from The Wagamama Bride and topics related to my family in Japan have appeared in The Jerusalem Post, The Japan Times, Tablet, The Jewish Forward, chabad.org and Asian Jewish Life Magazine, among others.
